Pip and the Heart That Forgot How to Bloom is a cozy magical realism novella set in the small Vermont town of Bridgewater Corners. Julie Beisel, forty-two and five years widowed, has sealed her six beehives with wax, let her garden surrender to brambles, and reduced her once-famous "wonder honey" business to selling plain dried herbs from the porch. The day she finally takes shears to the overgrowth, a small, glowing creature named Pip emerges from the soil at the base of her last living rosebush, a "wonder keeper" from her grandmother's half-remembered stories, and asks a single gentle question: What if the emptiness you guard is actually space for something new? At the same moment, her quiet neighbor Michael Paine, who has trimmed her hedges and left jars of ordinary honey at her gate without knocking for five years, appears with another one.
Over the weeks that follow, and with a town council deadline looming that could force the sale of her cottage, Julie and Michael clear the brambles, reopen the hives, replant the beds of flowers Michael once planted in silent code to her (red zinnias for courage, pink yarrow for quiet affection, yellow coreopsis for hope, white alyssum for new beginnings), and coax the first wonder honey in half a decade. A midnight summer storm kills one hive and cracks the relationship open: Julie, panicked, demands they force a harvest the surviving bees can't sustain, and Michael finally tells her what his patience has been hiding: his younger brother Sam drowned when they were boys, and every hedge and flower he has tended since has been a refusal to lose another person to silence.
A cozy magical novella about a heart learning to bloom again.
