Six Mennonite friends go camping in the Allegheny National Forest for three days in June. Sam brings laminated checklists. Sarah brings eleven kinds of trail mix. Brian Yoder brings a secret: he has been losing his faith for three and a half years. Then something starts moving in the hemlocks at night. This is a Pennsylvania story about friendship, fear and belief, and it gets very quiet before it gets loud.
In the deep green heart of Allegheny National Forest, six longtime Mennonite friends arrive for what should be an ordinary June camping trip. Sam and his laminated checklists, Sarah and her eleven obsessive varieties of trail mix, steady Noah, precise Ruth, perceptive Debbie, and quiet carpenter Brian Yoder, who has been slowly losing his faith for three and a half years without telling a soul.
Strange, deliberate sounds move through the hemlocks at night. Something large shifts beneath the black surface of the Allegheny Reservoir. On the third evening, Brian walks alone into the trees, drawn by a pull he cannot name. When he vanishes, the five who remain are left searching the dark with flashlights and rising dread, their friendships suddenly stripped raw under the weight of fear and unspoken truths.
He returns the next afternoon, unharmed, but utterly changed.
Around the final campfire, Brian tells them what happened in five minutes at a sunlit creek deep in the woods. A plain, unremarkable stranger who knew his name, knew every hidden fracture in his faith, and knew each of the five friends better than they knew themselves. In those five minutes the man spoke with devastating clarity, named their private griefs and hidden gifts, and laid a hand on Brian’s bleeding palm. When he lifted it, the wound was gone.
What follows is not spectacle, but something far more shattering: the slow, honest unraveling of everything they thought they knew about themselves and one another. Long-buried romantic tensions surface. Old wounds between friends are finally named. And six ordinary people discover that the very qualities that once kept them isolated: Sam’s relentless preparation, Sarah’s protective humor, Ruth’s guarded precision, Noah’s quiet strength, Debbie’s quiet seeing, Brian’s ability to read the grain in the wood, are exactly what the world now needs from them together.
Raw, luminous, and unflinchingly tender, FIVE MINUTES is a story of faith eroded and restored, of love spoken at last, and of six friends who walk out of the Allegheny carrying something ancient and new: a shared purpose they were always meant to find, not alone, but side by side in the dark.
Six Mennonite friends, three days in the Allegheny National Forest, and something in the dark.
